Spinach Ravioli

Ravioli And Tomato Sauce

Ravioli and tomato sauce might evoke images of the canned variety that we all knew from all those TV commercials growing up. I don’t know about you but I can’t stomach the canned ravioli and my belly complains if I try.

For a long time our family almost never ate ravioli. Not because we didn’t like them, but because it was a labor intensive meal. Making ravioli from scratch is not an easy task. The only other option was the canned variety and that was gross! So we didn’t eat ravioli for many years except for the rare occasions when we would buy some from the local italian bakery (because they also made fresh pasta in addition to the baked goods). But those were expensive.

Making individual Ravioli by hand at home is labor intensive.

Then one day, while shopping, Grandma Antonia came across a ravioli product and she was curious to try it. It wasn’t canned it was frozen and it looked similar to what hand-made ravioli looks like, so she decided to give it a go. She’s a very adventurous Italian Grandma!

The product she found was at Costco. Pictured below.

She made her basic tomato sauce, cooked the ravioli following the package instructions, and served it to the family. It was an instant hit! After that, this ravioli dish was added into the family’s meal rotation. Another delicious, quick and easy meal. Want to know how easy and fast you can plate this excellent dish? Read on for the recipe.

Ravioli And Tomato Sauce, So What Does It Look Like On A Plate?

I know . . . The picture at the top of this blog post looks like sauce covered with cheese. I love tomato sauce so I poured it on thick. My fault. And I also like grated Pecorino Romano cheese. The result is that you can’t really see any ravioli in that picture. You can see here what it looked like before the sauce and cheese made it onto to plate.

How To Make It?

This recipe is one of the easiest. Why? Because you just make the basic tomato sauce following the directions for that recipe, which is super simple! You can find the Basic Tomato Sauce Recipe in this post: Tomato Sauce – A Basic Recipe And for the ravioli, just follow the package instructions. They cook in about 5 minutes. And you’re done! As I said earlier, ravioli with tomato sauce, tastes like homemade because it is.

Just be careful removing the ravioli from the water. You must not drain them into a colander like you would other pasta because they are likely to break apart and you will have a mess. Instead gently remove them individually from the pot. You can use a large serving spoon, and if you have one that is slotted (or a skimmer) it’s even better for draining the water as you remove each ravioli.

The slotted serving spoon is best for plating the ravioli once it’s cooked.

What Other Ravioli Are Available?

The ravioli you see here is the spinach and cheese variety but there are now other brands and other versions of ravioli available. Both at your local big box grocer and online. So if you don’t care for spinach and cheese ravioli, you can maybe try the meat ravioli or chicken ravioli, or one of the many others you may find.

Give this dish a try and you’re likely to discover it’s another easy delicious recipe to put into your family’s meal rotation! Let me know in the comments what you think about this dish.
